Wordpress installs are a waste of money
There are a lot of things that irk me, idiocy, stupid people doing stupid things, idiocy… okay so maybe not a lot, but a good few. Near the top of my list is the dreaded blog install requests. There are a variety of excuses and they range from “I don’t want to learn PHP” to “I tried and I couldn’t figure it out”.
More often than not people are asking others to install Wordpress for them because “it’s too hard”. I realise that some people are more intuitive than others, but if you can upload an image and register at a forum then you can install Wordpress.
Basically all you have to do is create a database (no worse than registering at a forum) and put the database information into the WP-config-sample.php (which you need to right click and rename to WP-config.php before uploading). Your database information usually looks like this:
define('DB_NAME', 'becky_wordpress'); // The name of the database
define('DB_USER', 'becky_wordpress'); // Your MySQL username
define('DB_PASSWORD', 'zomgpassword'); // ...and password
define('DB_HOST', 'localhost'); // 99% chance you won't need to change this value
The becky_ is your username, whatever you use to login to your Cpanel with is what you put before the database. If your username is sparkles then it will be sparkles_database. If you’re on a host, like Dreamhost then you’ll need to change localhost to whatever your host specifies (this is usually in the MYSQL section or in their support files, if not ask).
After all that all you have to do is upload the files and point your browser towards /wp-admin/install.php and fill in your site name and e-mail. After that you login (and change your password) and you’re good to go. It should take about five minutes (depending on your internet connection) and it’s never any harder than registering at a forum.
There is no “PHP” involved in the installation, you don’t have to know how to write “PHP” to use the templates system and if you follow the directions you will figure it out. I’m going to make my mother install Wordpress with nothing more than the readme just to prove to you lazy idiots that it isn’t hard and you should flush money down the toilet for people to install it for you.
Perhaps the only sadder thing than the “plz install Wordpress for me” people are the “plz install Cutenews for me” people. I feel like smacking them sometimes.

Well, I paid just $1.50 to have my WP installed. Maybe some people do have the money to spend, but do not have time or interest to learn or deal with problems if something goes wrong. It’s not exactly being lazy/stupid. I personally prefer to invest my time on my photography/sewing projects, that’s all.

Maybe I shouldn’t talk since it was my host the one to install it for me, but that’s because she’s awesome like that. Still, I’ve met people who have no idea how to get from one folder to another… or even to define a path… so that might be the cause due to which they’re afraid of scripts.
Mom calls these people “enter enter” kids :P

I can’t stand Wordpress. All my friends said I was using cutenews just because I am too lazy to change a few variables. Noooo, to prove them wrong, I installed WP by myself on my site and tested it for a month. Yes, it is a nice secure and fast program, but it took me twice as long just to code a layout.
With cutenews, I coded my layouts in like 5 minutes (as most can tell) :P
Those people that just pay for it are either A) really lazy or B) just don’t get it. The majority are A. I would never pay $45 or even $1 for someone to install them for me. Go on Google or something, it costs you $0 and there are millions of tutorial sites on the internet. I have better things to spend my money on.
I usually lose a tad bit respect for web designers that don’t do their own crap, yet act all superior just because their site has “omg, like index.php?=vistor”. I’d rather praise a site that uses iframes, because at least I know the owner did the coding themselves, no matter how bad it may be.

I see one too many sites advertising “script installation.” Most of the time, all it is is uploading files and maybe using a database. They ask for way too much considering, and I just wonder why people would bother.
I use both cutenews and wp (just started with wp) and yes, wp can be difficult if you want to edit the themes or whatever, and it did take me a bit to figure out how to turn off the rte because it’s harder/impossible to validate your site with one, but if you read try a bit, it’s certainly better because you know what to do in the future.
Or, if you find it impossible, don’t pay $3.00 to install a free script, that’s kind of… no it is ridiculous. In my opinion, of course.
