Ultimately Time Doesn't Matter
I honestly don’t care whether you put three minutes into putting together your content or three hours, time means nothing to me when it isn’t my own. All I care about, as the visitor, is the end result, and the end result is usually picked over in about three seconds and then either filed away for future reference or snickered at and left behind in the endless quest for entertaining, well-done content.
Really though, does the amount of time you put into your site determine the amount of gratitude, respect, admiration and applause you receive? I think not! So why do so many people sit there and whine about people not loving them and respecting the fact that they spent all kinds of time on their site? I dunno, what’re you looking at me for? I asked you.
I spent, oh about two and a half weeks mocking up layouts, picking out colour schemes and arranging things the way I wanted them. Yes it took me that long, but I was only working on it in short bursts so the length of time is justifiable. So, please by all means comment and tell me about how this layout has changed your life, how it has made you weep with joy and how it makes feel so grateful that someone like me came along for you to give your full respect and admiration to. Please, go on I’m waiting.
/crickets chirp/ No one? Why ever not, I mean I spent a goodly amount of time on this goddamn thing, why isn’t anyone radiating gratitude and appreciation? Oh right, because they don’t care how long it took me to throw together a layout that they’ll dissect and most likely dismiss in about 7 seconds.
What prompted this? I got an email from someone who shall remain nameless. Now, SWSRN was quite shocked that I had said that I disliked their site and proceeded to tell me to please in the future to respect SWSRN and to not judge a site without first realising how much work the owner had put into it.
Right now the only time that matters is the time spent waiting for your layout and or content to load.

rolls eyes I’ve never really understood this ‘gratitude’ sort of policy. Of course I believe you’re not using it in the sense I think of. Or are you?
Some webmasters these days start their welcome message warning visitors not to dare criticize them because being at their site is a privilege. Although I guess this is a step up from if you don’t like it hit the x…
It truly doesn’t matter how much time you spent there, because that can’t be seen. I generally need months to come up with a new layout, whereas others merely need a few hours.
I believe webmasters need to understand that having visitors come to their site is a privilege – especially if it’s a personal site. Having a visitor who expresses an opinion (well let’s not consider flamers who insult you without any reason – had these too) those are PURE GOLD.

Your site changed my life Becky! Okay, anyways. To me I think it depends. I just thought of something as well. Now when someone “steals” someone’s coding, css, yada yada they spent time on taking it and editing it right? So where’s their happy parade? Sometimes I think time can be a factor in a site, and the design of it. Like your for example, it’s simple but I can tell you put time into it [your site’s layout] by the way it’s set up. Even if you didn’t it looks that way to me :P I don’t think time should be the deciding factor in falling at someone’s feet but, I think it should be considered… even if it’s only for a second :P

It’s understandable why SWSRN was offended when she had spent so much time on her site, but what you’re saying is true. Ultimately, nothing matters except for the final product. It’s the same idea in school (and most of life, actually). You’re graded based on the work you turn in, not on how much effort you put into it. Though recent changes in my school’s grading system have sort of been screwing with that…
And I like your site design. It’s clean and elegant. So I think I just might start reading your blog on a regular basis. :)

Delurking here!
Oh lordy I think I may just know the person you are talking about. If not I know someone JUST like her/him. I wrote something about it too, it was just too funny to let slip away.
Anyway, I like this layout, better than the old one I saw before. I like simple ones, coz it’s always the content that really holds my interest. I like the colours, the fact that the sidebar style reaches all the way down the page, that the search field is on top, the width of the text, the line spacing, font and everything. I can see that this layout has been well thought out as only someone who knows even a smidgen about anything can. And if that idiot doesn’t see it, then there’s nothing more that can be done. It’s pointless to argue with fools.
