As you probably already know Dreamhost, although not the only one, was hit by a wave of spam that affected around 3,500 FTP accounts. Fortunately I wasn’t one of the accounts hit, at least not yet knock on wood.
From what I understand most of the sites hit were running Wordpress and on Dreamhost, but that wasn’t isn’t the deciding factor, update Wordpress (and any other stable scripts you use), remove insecure scripts and change your passwords. Check your site for mischief and cross your fingers. If you’re unsure as to whether or not your script is insecure then Google around and or ask at Codegrrl Forums
Rumors abound of DH doing some very stupid things, I have no idea what’s true and what isn’t so I’ll refrain from making any assumptions in that department. That being said I’m not very pleased with what I’ve had so far, my site is slow and I’m sure some of you have noticed the unfortunate spaz-attack my stylesheet likes to do. It’s slightly better on static pages, meaning that usually just certain elements of the stylesheet don’t load, and on subpages.
At first I thought that it was just Textpattern, my runtime figures were within normal range though. I’ve enabled and disabled plugins, turned off logging, compressed my stylesheet and even tried putting the stylesheet offsite1.
Now I’m seriously considering starting a hunt for a new host, in lieu of being able to use Site5 (I don’t have a credit card and if I can’t get my grubby little paws on an MM prepaid card, Site5 is out of the running) I’m a little stumped as to what to use.
I need an ungodly amount of space/bandwidth thanks to my brother and his website (which I have to host) and I’m leary of going with someone that offers a lot of space/bandwidth for a low price (again). Anyone have any suggestions? I’m in the $130CAD and under range, need quite a bit of space/bandwidth and as long as its name doesn’t end in either Dr and eamhost or Net and rillium I’ll be able to seriously consider it.
I just noticed that there are quite a few links in this entry. I’m sure that breaks some rule but I can’t quite be arsed to care. Switched up the layout a bit and compressed the stylesheet into a mishmash of characters. Let me know if this affects the load time in any way.
1 As recommended by Particletree – How to speed up your Textpattern website don’t bother, I tried doing that and I noticed an increase in loading time. Using Slimstat also slowed down the page load time.
