Saturday Link Round-Up 6

It’s that time again, folks! I’m experimenting a bit with the amount of images in the post, tell me if you prefer more or if I’ve hit the right amount. And if you have any requests, suggestions or comments then by all means post them (I don’t bite, I promise).

Miscellaneous

What is fondant? – The term “fondant” can refer to a couple of different things. In many British cookbooks, for instance, a soft-centered chocolate cake is called “chocolate fondant.” The term primarily refers to a cooked mixture of sugar, water and cream of tartar that can be used either as a candy filling or as a frosting for a cake.

Knitted Cups Knitted Cups – Knitted China is not all that hard to do. You could even make some yourself, with a little bit of practice. However, once it’s done, you may be a little reluctant to serve coffee in them. So we suggest tea. Heck, boiled water will do.

Show Your Popularity With Twitter Counter – I recently visited the size of Sarah Perez who is running the excellent Sarah in Tampa blog where a Twitter Follower counter caught my attention. The counter looks very similar to the Feedburner counter that I have added to my blog to display the number of users who are reading my RSS Feed each day.

How to Wear Your Fragrances. – Well, believe it or not there is an “art” to applying a fragrance. Fragrance creators recommend that layering your scent is best. I have to admit that I have often not taken the proper steps of applying my fragrance (perfume, eau de toilette, etc.) and have found it does not last as long as it would have, if I had applied it properly.

Top 10 Modern Life Survival Skills – Avoid everyday problems and modern mini-calamities by arming yourself with the right know-how before you head out into the world. Locking yourself out of your apartment, losing your car in the Gargantu-Mart lot, standing lost on a city street corner—you can overcome almost any day-to-day disaster with some clever thinking and a bit of knowledge.

Calculate your electricity costs – Michael Bluejay’s Saving Electricity site gives you the low down on electricity costs and how to save them. He breaks down everything so nicely – even has a calculator to help you estimate what your electricity consumption is costing you (more on this in a minute)

How to Fold Anything – Today’s feature is from RealSimple with How to Fold Anything, you’ll find information on how to fold all sorts of clothing & household items. I’ve also included a neat video at the bottom explaining how to fold a t-shirt in 2 seconds.

Handy Substitute Recipes For Baking – Substitutes for Cake flour, self-rising flour, half and half cream and more.

Vector Coffee Cup Creating a Coffee Cup with Inkscape – Inkscape is an open source alternative to Adobe Illustrator and other programs for creating vector graphics. In this first Inkscape tutorial for VECTORTUTS, we’ll create a beautiful coffee cup and show off some of Inkscape’s features. We’ll mostly be drawing shapes and using the Gradient Tool to accomplish the desired effect. If you’re familiar with Illustrator or a similar program, you should be able to follow along relatively easily.

Top 28 Free Font Directory Resource Sites – One of the hardest things in design is looking for that perfect font, that font you can see in your mind but can’t find. You end up browsing for hours on end trying to find it. If you are like me you will find this frustrating and tedious.
There are almost 100,000 free fonts withinin this post, sorry, I think I have just made the search longer.

Wordpress

Styling Your Wordpress Comments – fun part of customizing Wordpress themes is designing a comments format which complements the rest of the site. Here are three examples from recent projects, including code samples and downloads to the original .PSDs:

Wordpress Template Tags Reference WordPress Template Tags Reference Guide – We created this quick reference guide to expedite our WordPress theme development, and we found it so useful that we would like to share it with you.

Switching Mindsets: From WordPress to ExpressionEngine – I’ve been a devoted WordPress user for the past four years. I had invested quite a bit of time into learning MovableType when a developer friend suggested I try WordPress instead. The minute I saw its templating system, which is both flexible and easy for a designer like me to grasp, I was sold. It proved to be remarkably “hackable” and at Syracuse University (my previous employer), we frequently used it as a web content management system for clients with simple needs. It worked well enough, and I was content to stick with a single software package—until now.

Photoshop

The third option would be to take advantage of the resources found in this article.

18 of the Best Photoshop Videos Online – Photoshop’s all about the visuals, so it’s no surprise that it makes for some good videos. Today PSDTUTS is launching it’s video addition to the sidebar and video channel at Vimeo, so what better time to take a look at some of the great PSD Videos around the web! But be warned, surfing these video sites is a great way to kill your productivity!

Tell a Lie Tell a Lie – The most controversial lies told with photography today are those told by news photographers who manipulate their work photographs to tell a different story….

Which Doctype is for me? – This is yet another thing that has been bothering me for quite some time now, that I just haven’t had the will power to address it. Well, I think it has pushed me over the edge. Why are people using Transitional DOCTYPES for new projects?

How to Talk to Non-Tech-Savvy Clients – Learning how to carry out a compelling conversation with your non-tech-savvy client is a crucial skill that all freelancers must possess, especially if you want to keep a steady cash flow.

Effective Use of Blog Sidebars – While sidebars aren’t the primary focal point of blogs, they still have an important role in usability and appearance. A well-designed sidebar can make it easier for visitors to find what they like, which will keep them at your site longer and improve your overall effectiveness. On the other hand, a poor sidebar can lead to lost and frustrated visitors.
