DIY
50 Free Apron Patterns & Tutorials – Last November’s big list of free apron patterns and tutorials is one of the most popular resources on Tipnut, but the fun doesn’t stop there!
Here are another whopping 50 patterns and tutorials I’ve found online since then, including the couple vintage apron patterns published on Tipnut since that time so everything’s in one handy place for you.
Homemade Deodorant – I realize not everyone wants to make their own deodorant. It probably falls into the category of lollipops for some, and for me, crackers. I just think, “Why?” However, I found myself revisiting the homemade deodorant issue again lately, and here’s a few good reasons why; I stink, conventional deodorant ingredients freak me out, the natural stuff rarely works for me, and when I have made my own in the past (using rubbing alcohol or just baking soda, etc.) it’s not really done the trick. Also, I love the way essential oils smell, especially ylang ylang and orange, which are easy to add to my own concoctions.
Mitten Thumb Pattern Decoded! – These are the Super Mittens from the book Weekend Knitting. These mittens are knit with Paton’s Rumor yarn in Duberry Heather (code name for “pink”) and I needed one and a half skeins of yarn to complete two mittens. I used size 10.5 double-pointed needles and then at the very end of the mitten, when decreasing, I switched to smaller size 9 double-pointed needles. Same when decreasing the thumb. It made a nice smooth decrease.
Whit’s Knits: Stars + Stripes Felted Hot Pads – Whatever our politics, I think we can all agree that America really lucked out in the flag department. Our flag just embodies great design. It’s bold and distinctive and jaunty. It’s happy, but not insipid; spunky, but not undignified. I think it perfectly suits us as a country.
HOW TO – Attach stuff to walls without drilling holes – I didn’t want to ruin my kitchen tiles and wall by drilling a giant hole through it, but I did want to hang my knife and paper/foil thing to the wall. Solution: superglue and magnets.
Freebies
400+ Swirls, Curls, and Fleurons – Ornamental web design is often comprised of swirling, curling, or flower shaped elements. This style is influenced from decorative art pieces and architectural accents from centuries ago. Using ornamental style is a great way to give your site a classic look. Here is a list of Photoshop brushes that should help you out with your next ornamental design.
10 Free WordPress Themes That Blow Many Premium Themes Away – There are now more than 100 premium WordPress themes on the market but the quality of those themes varies greatly. In fact, some ‘premium’ themes don’t really deserve that title; they’re only ‘premium’ themes in that you have to pay to use them. In some cases, you’d have to be mad to do so.
Tutorials
Create a post-it effect in The Gimp – A common trend in web design lately is the idea of using everyday objects in designs such as pens, ink, paper, handwriting and post-its. In this tutorial I going to show you how to design a yellow post-it in The Gimp, I will be doing a number of tutorials teaching you how to do a number of things in the coming weeks including paperclip, paper and pen effects, so keep checking for these or subscribe to my RSS feed.
Blogger Tips: feeds RSS list menu – Some readers asked to me ho to add the feed RSS menu in my previous post in their Blogger template. It’s very simple and no complex following these simple instructions. (I added this menu on my template… click on the Feed RSS link on my navigation bar).
Food
Easy Doughnuts – A dangerous thing to say after dinner is: “Do you want doughnuts?”
It’s a dangerous thing to say, because almost certainly the other person will say “yes” and then what do you do? Especially since most doughnut recipes require time for the yeasted doughnut dough to rise?
Plum Upside Down Cake Recipe – My father should have a t-shirt that reads “I’ve never met a dessert I didn’t like” or in this case, “Have Plums Will Bake”. His baking endeavors might not always look their bakery best (please don’t ever ask him to frost a cake and sometimes his pies are downright scary-looking) but more often than not the results taste fabulous. This plum upside-down cake is actually quite pretty and is based on a recipe he found in an old issue of Fine Cooking magazine. The taste idea is that of slices of tart plum balanced by a sweet cake base. He used red Santa Rosa plums that are just now coming ripe. My mother thought the cake was just a bit too tart for her, but dad and I love it just the way it is.
Tips and Tricks
10 moving tips: how to index your boxes and keep dishonest movers from opening them – When you’re moving, sometimes it’s all you can do to get everything packed and ready for the day the truck arrives. But you know as soon as you get to the new place, you’re going to be frustrated if you can’t find the items you most need when you need them. Just a little bit of planning ahead can make this task so much easier.
Miscellaneous
A retro renovation – Pam of Retro Renovation wrote the other day about a blast-from-the-past mid-century modern home she posted and I loved it so much I decided to post it today instead of doing my typical Flickr finds.
Fun and cool way to manage multiple twitter accounts – I stumbled on to a service for managing multiple twitter accounts and at first I thought it was going to be one of those second rate sites, I was put off a bit by the 16×16 logo I saw on the referring page. However when I got to Matt I was instantly pulled in.This is a site with a truly unique and fun style, which allows you to very effectively manage a whole load of Twitter accounts while your at it.
