Reasons to use a blogging script
Based on my experience, both as a site owner and visitor.
- Permalinks. I love permalinks, I also love linking to permalinks to show people the entry I’m rambling on about. Think about it as you do your subpages, it wouldn’t make sense to not have a URL for your subpages, right? Not that that made any sense either, but hopefully you catch my drift.
- Comments. I like to comment on lots of things, blog entries and sometimes even subpages. Why wouldn’t you want to encourage discussion?
- Archives. Unless you’re a very industrious person I can’t imagine anyone manually adding each entry to a page (I used to do this actually, needless to say most of my entries disappeared off the face of the web). I, for one, enjoy scrolling through archives to see what other goodies the author has to offer. What’s the point of a blog if you can’t have archives?
- Categories.
Honestly? Those are the only four reasons why I would use a blogging system for their blog (and why I encourage people to use a blogging system).
There isn’t any shame in using a blogging script or CMS1. I look at it as a fancy-shamancy version of PHP Includes. I still handcode everything (with the exception of the textile generated lists on the entries and some of the pages, and stuff in the sidebar). I can, and do, run quite a few manually driven sites, but for larger sites I much prefer a nice tidy CMS, such as Textpattern.

I used to blog manually as well – all of the entries from that time is gone and that is rather sad.
There is so many people discussing whether or not to create a CMS by yourself or create one – I would love to be able to sew my own clothing and bake my own bread – but where’s the time for it?! I’m satisfied with what I got.
