My Kingdom for Some Hot Water

Our gas company decided to be pricks and shut off our gas without informing us. In spite of the fact that last months payment was sent out and this months payment wasn’t due for another two weeks. They claim they didn’t receive last months payment, which is fair enough, I would have liked a bit of warning before they shut it off. A letter, a phone call, email, something. Alas, they don’t seem to agree, so now we’re stuck waiting until tomorrow at noon for the gas guy to come and turn the pilot light back on. At noon tomorrow. I haven’t had a shower since Monday morning! I don’t know how much longer I can wait before I have another one, and pot baths are not fun (anyone who says they are is lying).

You’d think that maybe I’d welcome a nice cool dip in the bathtub what with the stifling heat, except the day that the gas was shut off there was a rather severe storm. Wind, hail, rain, thunder, lightening, the works and because of that it cooled off drastically, this morning was barely 50°C, windy and raining. It was so much fun trying to wash my hair this morning, shivering in the bathroom in my nightgown desperately trying to work up the courage to stick my head back under the water to rinse the soap off. I nearly decided to leave some of the soap in, but remembered that I’d kick myself later for it. It took me a while, but I washed my hair and face goddammit. Right after I was finished I rushed into my room, took of my damp nightgown and wrapped myself in my big fluffy robe, then proceeded to warm up with my extra-hot Conair hairdryer which has a burning smell, but I was willing to risk it bursting into flames if it meant that I could warm myself by the fire.

I’d really rather that the hydro company was the one who didn’t get their payment, I can live without hydro, but without gas? I need clean clothes and most especially: a clean me. Not that I’m dirty, but the hairspray in my hair has a tendency to get gummy and make a mess of my hair after a night spent tossing my head around on my pillow. Think cavewoman who doesn’t have access to soap and or water. We’re heating up water to do dishes and “cook”, actually just soak, the babies food (the babies being our two dogs, Teddy and Peanut Butter), I’m not brave enough to warm up water and lug it upstairs for a nice warm pot bath. I must say, though that a nice cold blast of water aimed directly at your head is a good way to wake up in the morning if you don’t have any coffee on hand (or in my case can’t drink coffee on a regular basis). I wouldn’t recommend it though, it’s rather traumatizing.

I think I might cry if they decide not to come tomorrow. I want a shower. But at least my hair is clean?

So um, coincidence. This also happened to me, only my water pump decided to up and die. So we had to pay a man 800$ to put in a new one. The water pump committed suicide last Monday and they guy put the pump in at noon today, Wednesday. I was miserable since it was exam week. So. Yeah. No water whatsoever for three days.

Have a lovely time when your hot water comes back! :D

I feel your pain, we’ve been out of hot water for about 6 days now. They’re repairing something and we’re supposed to get in back on 22nd. I have no choice but to shower with icy cold water. It’s a torture, I shiver before I even come to the bathroom. Although my skin burns after I come out , so at least I’m not cold all the time … :/

To hot water!

Oh I relate to that. A few years ago there was a fire at the gas company and the whole city and everything lost gas for almost 2 weeks. It was awful. I ended up running away to my aunts place for a week cos they had an electric water system but in my house it was boiling up buckets of water and showering with those. It was intense, I never want to have to do that again. You really do take things like hot water running out of the tap for granted.
