But I'm so cool! Apr 19, 02:55

Please explain to me what the point of having an exclusive community that has an application to join is. No really, please tell me because it’d be super awesome if someone knew the secret of exclusive communities on Livejournal because I can’t for the life of me understand it.

A while back I requested the moderators of a community on Livejournal to let me join. Two of the requirements I didn’t meet:

  1. I don’t have an active Livejournal, however, I provided a link to show that I am in fact active on the internets and not a troll),
  2. That you should probably see if any of your friends are in the community and then list them so they can vouch for your identity.

I don’t have an active Livejournal; I hate Livejournal because of its shoddy markup, lack of customization (at least for me!) and lack of control over the administration side of things. In short, I prefer using Textpattern on this domain to having a Livejournal, Blogger or Wordpress account. Before anyone jumps on me, is perfectly okay for most people, but not for me.

I told them that while I couldn’t name anyone as a close personal friend from their member list, I could give them names of people outside of the community so they could verify that I’m not just a troll looking to leak their posts.

You’d think that any sane, reasonable person would see that I’m not one of the riff-raff they were presumably trying to keep out with their rules and regulations, but nope, I was declined membership to their community.

Okay fine, they have the right to decline me, and any other person membership if they feel I/they don’t meet the requirements. But I have to question the reasoning behind a rule that I’ve now started to notice on quite a few communities: Have an active LJ. Is it not enough that I keep an LJ for community purposes, do I honestly have to update it? A blog, in my opinion, is a blog whether it be on a domain, subdomain or hosted on a blog site such as Livejournal or Blogger. If the owner of the LJ in question can provide an alternative to their LJ then it should be acceptable, right? Or am I Just a little bit nuts here?
